This market bag crochet pattern is the perfect accessory if you are wanting to live more sustainably. The Summer Harvest Market Bag is sturdy enough for carrying produce and lightweight so that it’s easy to carry around. Because this tote requires only two stitches, this bag is a very easy bag that works up quickly and mindlessly.

Over the past year, I have become more conscious about living more sustainably and reducing my waste. A simple and easy way to start reducing waste is using re-usable bags when your shopping instead of the plastic bags.
And what better way to start using reusable bags than by making your own?

Thanks to the stitch used with this bag, the Summer Harvest Bag is really dense and sturdy. I also love how this stitch is similar to the traditional crochet mess market bags, but it is still different and unique!
Because this market bag crochet pattern uses only two stitches, it is a really easy, mindless project.

I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Goldenrod. This yarn is one of my favorite cotton yarns, it’s soft and it had incredible stitch definition. This yarn is also super durable which is exactly what you want for a bag! Another reason why I love this yarn is because of all the color options. There are 24 color ways to choose from, and they are all so beautiful and vibrant. I think this bag would look lovely in Succulent, Lilac, or Silver.

Video Tutorial
Need a little more help on how to do the cross dc stitch? Below is a video tutorial on how to do the stitch!
Pattern
Work 108 foundation scs (Counts as row 1). Sl st into the first sc, ch 1.
Round 2-7: 1 sc in every st (108). Sl st into first st, ch 1.
Ch 2 at the end of round 7. From now on, do not join at the end of each round, instead work in a continuous spiral.
Round 8: Skip first st, in next st work 1 dc, go back and work 1 dc in the skipped st (work this dc around the 1st dc). Continue working Cross dc around (108)
Round 9: Work the first dc in the first dc from round 8, work the next dc in the ch 2. Continue working Cross dc around (108)
Round 10-27: Work Cross dc around (108)
Round 28: *Work 82 foundation scs (alternative is ch 82), skip 25 sts (as shown in the picture below), work 1 dc in next st. Go back and work 1 dc in the 25th st (this creates a Cross dc). Work Cross dc for the next 32 sts* repeat one more time. (17 Cross dc on either side of the handles)

Round 29-33: 1 sc in every st (224)
Sl st into st. Fasten off and weave in loose ends.
Bottom
Flip the bag inside out and lay flat. Sew on the line to close the bottom of the bag.

On each side on the bottom, fold to create a point. Sew on the line.

Tack the triangle down on the lines.
Repeat on the other side. Flip the bag back right side out. This is what it should look like.

In the materials section you say 470 yards of worsted weight (4) held together, I am not seeing where you instruct to use two strands? Is that an error or am I using two strands? I love this and want to make it. ?
Susan,
You use two strands of yarn held together throughout the entire pattern.
Hope this helps!

Your Video ONLY SHOWS 1 STRAND BEING USED IN THE VIDEO !!!!!!!!!!!
Rebecca, the video is a tutorial on how to do the stitch, not a tutorial on how to do the bag
I am not understanding round 28, I guess I am not sure about the (skip 25 sts, I am not understanding how to make the handles do you have a video I can watch
Hello!
I just updated the pattern with a photo and clearer instructions… hope this helps!
Grace-
I love this tote! I am almost finished but I am a stuck. I just finished row 27. It does not say to fasten off, so do I start row 28 with 82 sc foundation? You have in parenthesis “alternative is ch 82” do I ch 82 instead of the sc foundation? Then you mention as shown in picture below. I do not see the picture. Please help me, I am making this tote for a birthday gift.
Thanks!
Victoria,
I am so sorry that you are having trouble with the pattern. Yes, you can ch 82 instead of doing the sc foundation. This is to create the handle. For some reason, the photo never uploaded when I updated the patter, however I added it now.
I hope this helps!

I’m not sure if I’ve made a mistake but I ran out of yarn. Has anyone else had this problem?
Yes! I’m just about out of yarn and am only on row 20. I think I need to order 2 more balls of yarn. I just looked at the comments to see if anyone else ran into this problem.
I’m am confused on the beginning of row 8. it says a the end of row seven to chain 2. zdoes that mean chain 2 addition after the sl st and ch listed in the rows 2-7 instruction to make 3 ch total or does it mean chain 2 total after the sl st?
McKenzie,
You will chain a total of 2 stitches.

I am stuck because I can’t figure out how to slip stitch the first row together without it coming out crooked. I had done rows 1-9 and then realized one side of my bag was basically diagonal. Any advice? Also is it supposed to be so wide? I did exactly 108 stitches with the correct yarn weight and hook size, but my bag seems like it’s going to be huge…
Adeline,
Hmmmm, Do you have a looser gauge? That might be the problem…
Grace
I, too had this problem. I think its because you are adding a slip stitch and chain stitch to each round, thus slowly making it bigger and bigger. I THINK you are maybe supposed to chain one and then skip the chain one from the previous round and do your single crochet into the first single crochet after the sl stitch and chain stitch, I took out my stitches about 6 times trying to figure out what the heck was wrong. Grace, am I right about this or is there something else we are doing wrong? The other thought I had was that maybe we are only supposed to do the sl st and chain the first time we were connecting the ends. After that just keep doing single crochet all the way around and no sl st, chain 1 each time.????
I love making this bag and the instructions are so easy to follow. The bag is sturdy and holds the weight of alot of contents very well. I just finished my 4th one! They make perfect gifts for all ages.
I’m not understanding the chain 2 when starting row 9. Could you clarify that for me?
Kay,
There is a ch 2 because this is the row where you start working double crochets.

I LOVE this bag and am making it for my daughter’s birthday (turning 20!). However, with the 4mm hook I’m really struggling to get two strands of yarn to stay on it. I’m using a bamboo hook from Lion. I’m wondering if anyone else has this issue and if they sized up to a 4.5mm hook? Or advice? I normally use aluminum hooks but they didn’t have any in the 4mm sizes so I went ahead a bought the bamboo one….maybe this is the problem?
UPDATE: it was the bamboo crochet hook that was the problem. I ordered an aluminum one from Amazon and I’m having no trouble at all. Note to self: don’t use bamboo hooks. 🙂
1 just used 1 strand. This is for my daughter and she was ok with that. Also, my gauge is WAY bigger, so I had to leave out about 20 stitches to match the size lol, but this has been a fun and easy project to work on.
Thank you so much for this awesome pattern!!!! Love it! 🙂
Hi!
I am pretty new to reading patterns, and I’m confused for rounds 2-7, am i working straight across and turning or working around (so one right to left = round 2, then right to left = round 3)??
You should be working in the round.
I’m currently on row 28, when I chain 82, skip 25 stitches, 32 dc & then skip 25 again, I end up with only 13 cross dc on the second side. What am I doing wrong? I have 108 stitches on the previous row so I’m not sure.
I had the same problem. Did I do something wrong? The numbers don’t add up.
I had the same problem 🥲
I’m so confused by the ch 2 at the end of round 7 is this right at the last st of the round or should I slip stitch at the begging of round 7 and then ch 2? Sorry is just so confusing thank you
New crocheter here so this may be a silly question: do I still do a sc row between every cross double crochet row? Thanks!
Hello! Nope! It’s just double crochet rows for the rest of the bag until you reach the top.
I’m still so confused on round 28 even after the photo and reading through everyone’s comments. 82 plus 25 plus 1 is 108. Am
I supposed to be going around the entire bag only leaving one open space for a handle? I’m so confused with this step. Everything up to this step has been so easy! Im stuck 🙁
I’m having the same problem! The written instructios are confusing me sooo bad, I’m looking at the picture but don’t understand how to create that based on the instructions.
Round 28 I had the same issue. I worked out 14 cross stitches instead of 17. So works out to be 13 inside the handle and 14 outside the handle. Hope that makes sense. Should be 13, 14, 13, 14
Hello! I think I’m confusing myself after the foundation row- when I slip stitch back to the first stitch, am I supposed to do that to the top or bottom of the foundation row? There are “V’s” on both top and bottom, so I’m not sure which side to continue working on
