This plaid pillow crochet pattern is a beautiful cushion that adds sweet, rustic charm to any room. The Darlin’ Plaid Pillow is ultra soft and because it is made with bulky weight yarn, this a great quick, weekend project. The pattern includes two charts, that are both a different plaid patterns. Make both sides with the same plaid pattern, or make each side with a different plaid pattern.

After making the Darlin’ Plaid Tea Towel and Dishcloth set, I was inspired to make something else that uses the surface crochet technique to create a beautiful plaid pattern. While I was organize my yarn stash (my favorite thing to do besides crocheting lol), I came across this blue and white yarn and I knew it was perfect for making a pillow!

This pillow is much easier to crochet then you think! While you can crochet so many beautiful things with tapestry and intarsia crochet, I personally do not like having to carry colors while I’m crocheting. To make the base of the pillow, you only have to crochet a simple square with one color (I did this with the white). So to achieve the plaid look, I used the technique of surface crochet. This technique is a lot easier to do than it seems and I have an entire photo tutorial on how to do it HERE.

The yarn I used for this pillow was WeCrochet Billow. This was my first time crocheting with this yarn and it has quickly become one of my favorites! Billow is a bulky weight (5) cotton yarn.It is very rare to find a bulky weight yarn that is 100% cotton. I actually couldn’t believe that this was cotton because it is so soft. Seriously, if you love yarn that’s so soft you just want to bury your face in it, this yarn is for you! Not to mention this yarn comes in so many beautiful colors!

Surface Crocheting
If you do not know how to surface crochet, I have a separate blog post on how to surface crochet HERE.
I have provided 2 different plaid patterns that can be followed. I used the grid pattern on one side and the plaid on the other side. Feel to use one pattern for both sides too.
Notes For Grid
- The blue lines do not represent single crochets. Instead, the blue lines show where to work the surface crocheting.
- The vertical lines represent working in between the stitches.
- The horizontal lines represent working in between the rows.
Grid Pattern
Vertical lines: Work 1 row of surface crochet between every four stitches.
Horizontal lines: Work 1 row of surface crochet every 5 rows.

Plaid Pattern
Vertical lines: In multiples of 5 stitches, surface crochet in between stitches 2 & 3, and 3 & 4.
