This crochet fair isle beanie pattern makes for the ideal hat for the winter months. The Vanilla Pines Beanie to keep you warm during all of your seasonal activities. Inspired by classic, knit fair isle, the colorwork in this hat is the perfect project for crochet colorwork beginners. The pattern includes written instructions and a chart for the colorwork to ensure that this hat is a breeze to crochet!

One of my favorite characteristics of knitting is fair isle colorwork. I love the beautifully intricate patterns that can be created with this stitch. Because of my love for fair isle, I really wanted to design a hat using this technique!
I know that crochet colorwork is not a new concept, but it is definitely a new process to me. I have briefly played around with colorwork, but I have never designed a pattern with all of the color changes.

The main reason why I have never crocheted colorwork before is because I thought it was too complicated. If you have this same fear towards colorwork, let me tell you, it’s not complicated at all. In fact, once you work a couple of rows, you get into a rhythm and it becomes quite easy to do!
This is the perfect crochet fair isle beanie pattern for beginner colorwork crocheters!

Skill Level: Intermediate
Size: Fits most teens and adults
Measurements: Width: 8 ¾ inches, Length: 8 inches
Gauge: With K hook, approximately 10 rows of 7 csc = 2 inches
Stitches Used:
Sl st: Slip Stitch
Ch: Chain
Sc: Single crochet
Csc: Center single crochet (also known as the waistcoat st)
Instead of inserting the hook into the loops on top of the st, insert the hook into the V of the st from the previous round (indicated by the arrow). Yarn over, pull through, yarn over pull through both loops on hook.
NOTE: It is important to keep the stitches loose. This will make it easier to work in the center of the stitches.
How to Change Colors:
Insert hook into st, yarn over with the first color, pull back through st.
With the second color, yarn over.
Pull through the two loops on hook.
I recommend carrying the yarn that is not being used behind the stitches.
