This crochet French beret pattern is the accessory of your dreams! Finish off your cozy autumnal outfit with the Ville Beret for ample style and warmth. Enjoy a peaceful stroll, surrounded by trees, along the river bundled up in a wool coat and the Ville Beret. Whimsical and feminine, this timeless beret will not only keep you warm, but also stylish.

I originally designed a French beret hat pattern 4 years ago. I was really proud of the design, especially since it took so many attempts to get it right. However, over the past couple of years I have wanted to revisit the pattern and change some aspects of the pattern.
With the intention of changing just a few rows, I ended up completely reworking the entire design. However, I am so glad that I did because this crochet French beret pattern is even better than the original! It lays so nicely and comfortably and it is so so warm with the wool yarn.

When selecting the yarn for this hat, I knew I wanted a yarn that was ultra fluffy to mimic the wool berets. I settled on using WeCrochet Wonderfluff Ombre, and I could not imagine using a different yarn for this project! I normally am all for substituting yarn for whatever you have on hand or what is easy to access, but I will say that if you want a soft, fluffy, wool-inspired beret, use Wonderfluff! This yarn is unbelievably soft to touch and a dream to crochet with!

Hi, can this be made with worsted weight 4 yarn instead of bulky yarn? Thank you!
Laura,
You can definitely try, you may have to do a couple more increase rounds to account for the smaller yarn size.

Hi I love this pattern! I made it with Lion Brand “touch of alpaca “yarn. Could you please tell me
the diameter of hat top when finished? Mine measures 11 1/2 inches across. Thank you, Diane
Easy to make but far too big and my head isn’t small by any means. Any suggestions on how to make the beret smaller apart from pulling it out and working less stitches. I used a dk yarn perhaps this was too thin.
Hi, do you plan on making a YouTube tutorial for this French beret? Thanks!
Hopefully at some point in the future!
I’m using a bulkier yarn with a J hook. I’m not sure when to start decreasing in order to get the proper measurements. Where should I be in inches across when I start the first decrease round?
Thank you,
Sheri
I believe it should be about 9-10 inches in diameter
