Stay cozy and warm this winter with this newsboys crochet hat pattern! Inspired by Taylor Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version), this hat emphasizes the stories that Taylor swift tells through her album. The album evokes a variety of emotions from love, pain, and everything in between. My hope is that you will find comfort in wearing this cozy Red hat.

As I was planning crochet designs for this fall, I drafted a newsboys-inspired hat in the line up. However, I didn’t know the color/style that I wanted to take with the hat design. In June, Taylor Swift announced that she would be releasing Red (Taylor’s version), I instantly knew that I had to recreate the red hat that she wore for the Red photoshoot!
As an avid Swiftie, creating anything that parallels her music or style, is always a delight for me. But even if you are not a Red fan, you will still love this hat! The classic newsboys style is ideal for those cold days when you are desiring warmth and style.

I was pleasantly surprised that my favorite part of this design process was the photoshoot. Typically, I don’t look forward to photographing crochet designs (that include me in the pictures haha), but I was so excited to have the chance to recreate the Red photos. Taking photos to mimic the aesthetic of Red (Taylor’s Version) was a dream come true and I truly felt like Taylor for a minute 🙂

For this pattern I used Hue+Me in Spicy. This was my first time using this yarn and it definitely did not disappoint! There are not many options for bulky weight (category 5) wool yarns that are easily accessible. Admittedly it is not a weight I use that much, but I may need to make more things in bulky weight just as an excuse to use Hue+Me again 😊

Row 1 working the brim what do you mean after the 20 hdc (22) what must I do
Thanks
Angela,
That is a typo and you should work 22 stitches. I just fixed it!
Have a good day!

I love this pattern but there seems to be some rows missing. It went from Row 3 to row 5. My brim is shorter than the one in your pictures, help please.
Pat, I’m not sure what you mean by going from row 3 to row 5. I checked the pattern and it has all of the correct number of rows. Did you check your gauge?
For the brim…goes from row 3 to row 5…no row 4 instructions
I just fixed it!
Hi this is a lovely hat. Do you have a video that accompanies it if so can you send the link? Have a great day thanks again!
Unfortunately, I do not have a video tutorial for this hat pattern.
I only have the J hook 🙁 Will I be able to use this hook for the whole hat or is K hook required?
You can try, but the hat may turn out smaller.
Am making this for a cold climate trip and need it a bit longer. Would I just continue round 13 before adding brim?
Yes that should work!
Just made your hat, love it so much that I made two! Lovely pattern but I did find the row count out on the brim a bit confusing. Row 6: 1sc together, 12 sc 1 sc together makes 14 stitches not 16 or am I doing something wrong? Didn’t matter I just added another row. Also I crochet a bit loosely so I added a slip stitch round to help make it fit me. So please the universe let me discover you. Can’t wait to do more of your fabulous patterns. Many thanks.
Do you think I’d be able to use #4 size yarn and go up a hook size?
Hello Karen,
You can definitely try! It might be a little snug, so you’ll also want to keep your tension loose!
I tried the pattern and everything was great until the brim. It isn’t curved and it won’t stay at a 90 degree angle from the hat. Any suggestions from more experienced crocheters of hats?
Hello Pamela,
You might need to adjust your tension for the brim so it is stiffer. Also, once I put on the hat, I can normally shape it so it stays in place!
Just made this hat. I love it! Thank you!
hi, how are you?
do you have a youtube channel?
Yes I do! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmaR2DZrByEHg_RLTgJFTmQ?view_as=subscriber
Do you have measurements for the hat? Mine’s looking really big – I just finished row 10 and it’s 11.5 inches across. I’m wondering if I should unravel some rows and start the decreases earlier.
Hello Sage, you can definitely start your decreases sooner to make the hat smaller!
Hello! I’m starting to knit it, could you tell me how much is the total diameter of the circle without the decreases?
Thank you!
