The Betty Hair Ribbon is the perfect (quick) crochet project for using up scraps of yarn. Styling this cute ribbon is endless – tie to a bag handle or style in your hair for a unique touch. This free crochet pattern includes many different options throughout the pattern, making this scarf totally customizable to your style preferences.

The May Scarf was one of my first free crochet patterns that I ever published (so nostalgic!). Since making the scarf several years ago, it has been tied to my backpack for a simple and feminine touch. Everyday when I use my backpack, I think about making a little upgrade to my bag accessory.
As I started to think about designing another ribbon/scarf, I wanted to make the pattern special. How was I going to do this? By making the design totally customizable. Have you ever heard of stories that allow you to “choose your own adventure”? I wanted that same concept with this design, I wanted crocheters to be able to “choose their own ribbon.” You can pick and choose within each variation to make a ribbon that is totally customizable to your preferences!
This crochet hair ribbon can be customized 3 different ways (with clear instructions throughout the pattern for each!):
- The ends: Select your favorite ends
- Length: In the pattern, I have written two different lengths. Of course, you can definitely make your own length as well!
- Border: I love the feminine touch the scallop border adds to the ribbon, but if you are seeking something more simple and minimal, the plain border adds a clean finish.

What Yarn Do I Use?
Another reason why I love this crochet hair ribbon pattern? It’s PERFECT for scraps! I have used a variety of fingering weight yarns for these ribbons. Fingering weight yarn makes these scarves lightweight and not too bulky. However, I am very aware that fingering weight yarn is not a common yarn weight for crocheters, and purchasing a 300 yard ball for a few hair ribbons doesn’t make sense. The solution? MINI SKEINS (Side note: this is the year of mini skeins for me, I am literally so obsessed and I literally have so many plans for mini skeins this year!). You can crochet a hair ribbon with just one mini skein and you have minimal yarn left over! I know that we all have different budgets when it comes to yarn, so I have linked some more affordable fingering weight options along with some indie dyers that have mini skeins!
