The Alcott Sweater Vest is the coziest layering garment for winter. Slipping this vest on, will make you want to stroll through a cozy bookstore, while sipping on a warm beverage. Made from a thoughtful combination of ribbing and textured stitches, this crochet sweater looks knit! This free crochet pattern includes tons of photos and a video tutorial to make the process as seamless as possible. Additionally this crochet slipover is available in sizes XS-4X.

Designing a crochet sweater vest has been on my “to design” list for yearssss. I love the academia aesthetic sweater vests provide, along with the layering versatility. If you’re like me, you easily overheat, so a sleeveless sweater is a wardrobe staple as it still provides warmth, while still being breathable.
Lately, I’ve been really inspired by textured knitwear, and naturally that influenced the stitch pattern of this design. This is probably my favorite stitch pattern that I’ve ever designed! It’s so squishy and incredibly fun to crochet! It has the right balance of squishy texture and classic ribbing.

Construction wise, this vest is worked flat in panels (front and back). Both panels are worked bottom up with simple decreasing around the arms and shoulders for the perfect effortless fit. Once seamed together, you’ll add ribbing around the armholes and neck for a polished finish. This may sound intimidating, but tons of photos are included throughout the pattern as well as a video tutorial for the ribbing technique.

Notes
- The pattern is worked in standard US crochet terms.
- The front and back panels are worked flat, in panels and then seamed together.
- You can easily adjust the length of the vest. A note is detailed in the pattern, when to add or subtract length.
- The model is wearing a size medium.
- I’m a left handed crocheter, so all the photos are worked from a left-handed perspective, right-handed crocheters simply work in the opposite direction!
- This vest is worked in panels (front and back). Both are worked bottom up with decreasing and shaping around the neck and shoulders. The panels are seamed together and the ribbing around the neck and shoulders is worked after the garment is seamed.

St: Stitch
Sl st: Slip Stitch
Ch: Chain
Sc: Single Crochet
Hdc: Half Double Crochet
Hdc 2 tog: Half Double Crochet Together
Sl St 2 tog: Slip Stitch Together (insert hook into st AND into the next st. Yarn over, pull through the two loops on the hook.)

Stitch Placement
is vest uses a combination of two techniques. The first is when working hdc, alternating between the third and back loop. The second technique is working with sl st to create a ribbed effect. Below are photos that demonstrate the placement of these stitches.
Half Double Crochet in Third Loop

Half Double Crochet in Back Loop

Gauge
With J hook, 11 rows of 19 sts (follow the instructions below) = 4 inches
Ch 24
Row 1: 1 hdc in the second ch from hook. Work 1 hdc in every ch (23 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: *1 hdc in the THIRD loop only of st, 1 hdc in the BACK loop only of the next st* repeat from * across (23 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Repeat row 2
If you’re gauge is off, I recommend either going up or down a hook size, depending on whether your gauge is too big or too small. However, if changing the hook size effects your desired fabric, I would recommend either going up or down a size in the pattern (again, dependent on whether your gauge was too big or small)

Ribbing
With I hook, ch 11
Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook work 1 hdc and in every ch across (10 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 2-56(62, 68, 74, 80, 86, 92, 98): Work 1 hdc in the third loop only of every stitch (10 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Now we will be working the body along the side of the ribbing.
Body
With J hook, ch 1
Row 1: Evenly work 73(81, 89, 97, 105, 113, 121, 129) hdc along the side of the ribbing (73,81, 89, 97, 105, 113, 121, 129 sts). Ch 1, turn.
NOTE: For working this first row across. I like to place a stitch marker in the middle of the ribbing and once I reach that marker, I’ll count to make sure I have hlaf of the stitch worked to that point. This helps to evenly distribute the stitches across.

Row 2-5: *1 hdc in the third loop only of st, 1 hdc in the back loop only of next st* repeat from * across (73,81, 89, 97, 105, 113, 121, 129 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sl st into the third loop only of every st (73,81, 89, 97, 105, 113, 121, 129 sts). Ch 1, turn.
NOTE: It is important that the sl sts are worked with a loose tension. If they are worked too tightly, it will be difficult to work into the st and it will cinch in the body. If you feel like the sl st are pulling in on the body, you’ll need to loosen your tension.
Row 7: 1 hdc in the back loop only of every sl st (73,81, 89, 97, 105, 113, 121, 129 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 8-11: *1 hdc in the third loop only of st, 1 hdc in the back loop only of next st* repeat from * across (73,81, 89, 97, 105, 113, 121, 129 sts). Ch 1, turn
Repeat rows 6-11 for a total of 26(26, 26, 26, 32, 32, 32, 32) rows. If you would like to add length to the vest, add the additional row here before continuing with the decreases.
We will now begin the decreases for the arm shaping.
Row 27(27, 27, 27, 33, 33, 33, 33): 1 hdc 2 tog. *1 hdc in the third loop only of st, 1 hdc in the back loop only of next st* repeat from * until two sts are left. 1 hdc 2 tog (71, 79, 87, 95, 103, 111, 119, 127 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 28(28, 28, 28, 34, 34, 44, 44): 1 hdc 2 tog. *1 hdc in the back loop only of st, 1 hdc in the front loop only of next st* repeat from * until two sts are left. 1 hdc 2 tog (69, 77, 85, 93, 101, 109, 117, 125 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 29(29, 29, 29, 35, 35, 35, 35): 1 hdc 2 tog. *1 hdc in the third loop only of st, 1 hdc in the back loop only of next st* repeat from * until two sts are left. 1 hdc 2 tog (67, 75, 83, 91, 99, 107, 115, 123 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 30(30, 30, 30, 36, 36, 36, 36): In the third loop only, 1 sl st 2 tog. 1 sl st in every st across. 1 sl st 2 tog into the last two sts (65, 73, 81, 89, 97, 105, 113, 121 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 31(31, 31, 31, 37, 37, 37, 37): In the back loop only of every sl st, hdc 2 tog. 1 hdc in every st. 1 hdc 2 tog into the last two sts (63, 71, 79, 87, 95, 103, 111, 119 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 32(32, 32, 32, 38, 38, 38, 38): 1 hdc 2 tog. *1 hdc in the third loop only of st, 1 hdc in the back loop only of next st* repeat from * until two sts are left. 1 hdc 2 tog (61, 69, 77, 85, 93, 101, 109, 117 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 33(33, 33, 33, 39, 39, 39, 39): 1 hdc 2 tog. *1 hdc in the back loop only of st, 1 hdc in the front loop only of next st* repeat from * until two sts are left. 1 hdc 2 tog (59, 67, 75, 83, 91, 99, 107, 115 sts). Ch 1, turn.
Repeat rows 28(28, 28, 28, 34, 34, 34, 34) – 33( 33, 33, 33, 39, 39, 39, 39) for a total of 44(44, 44, 44, 50, 50, 50, 50) rows. You should have 37(45, 53, 61, 69, 77, 85, 93) sts.

Assembly
Lay the front panel on top of the back panel with the right sides facing together. Seam the shoulders and the side seams together (indicted by the lines). I used the whip stitch method, but you can use your preferred seaming method.

For the ribbing around the neck and arms, you’ll be working in rows while simultaneously attaching it to the garment for a no seam method. There are photos below for assist you as well as a video tutorial.

With I hook, attach yarn in the back of the collar (or at the under arm seam for the armhole).

Ch 7(7, 7, 7, 9, 9, 9, 9)
Row 1: Work 1 hdc in the second ch from hook. 1 hdc in every ch across (6, 6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8, 8 sts). Sl st into the next two sts on along the back of the neck (indicted by the arrows). Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Skipping over the two sl sts, work 1 hdc in the third loop only of every st (6, 6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8, 8 sts). Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Work 1 hdc in the third loop only of every st (6, 6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8, 8 sts). Sl st into the next two sts on along the back of the neck. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat rows 2-3 until you’ve made it all the way around to the beginning.
Important Note: Once you reach a section where there are not defined stitches to work the sl sts into, it is a little bit more of a guessing game. It is better to spread the sl sts out more then working them too closely together. If they’re worked to close together, the ribbing will start to ripple and not lay flat. When I first did my ribbing, I worked too many rows around the collar, and it wasn’t laying flat. I ripped back and spread the sl sts out more (thus working fewer rows) and this fixed the problem!

Sl st the two sides together.
Repeat with the arm holes, joining at the under arm.
Weave in all loose ends. Block if desired.

Hi!! I absolutely love the pattern! I’m almost finished and it’s turning out gorgeously. I just wanted to reach out to let you know that I think there might be a typo in row 28 of the body. One of the steps says front loop rather than third loop.
Thank you!
Just wondering if this did end up being a typo or we should crochet into the front loop for row 28 in the body panel? thank you!!
I believe it’s correct for the first time you do row 28, but it’s the other way round for when you repeat row 28. Hope that helps!
