Thicken your crochet projects and add structure with this super simple DIY starch. Made with just two ingredients, this starch is perfect for crochet bookmarks, doilies, and home decor.
I recently designed the Jane Austen Bookmarks, and I knew I wanted to starch the finished bookmarks to add a bit of structure to the bookmarks. I knew I could purchase starch, but I wanted to explore DIY options for a cheaper alternative. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that making your own starch at home is super easy and only takes 2 ingredients! Below you will find the full photo tutorial for making your own starch as well as how to starch your project.
How to Make Starch
Step one
Add 1 cup or water and 2 tablespoons of corn starch into a small pan. Whisk until combined over medium heat.
Step Two
Bring to boil, stirring constantly. Boil until the mixture thickens and becomes more translucent.
Step three
Remove from heat and whisk in 1/2 cup of cold water. Let cool for 10 minutes.
Step four
Once the starch has cooled off, submerge the project you are starching.
step five
Gently wring out the excess starch. Block the project into the shape you’d like. The starch will dry keeping the project in that shape.
